Singapore

We had a brief foray here in the curious city/country of Singapore. Our plane ticket from Hadyai to Denpasar, Bali called for an overnight here. I still don't really understand this place. It's known for its wealth, cleanliness, efficiency, technology, and 'sterile' city planning. Which comes with a high price tag. The death penalty and other serious punishments are doled out for drugs, littering, or who knows what else. I definitely felt like I should be on my best behavior. TV's and announcements in the metro stations and on the train warned passengers to look for and report suspicious behavior, even illustrating a package left on the train causing it to explode as a consequence. Phew.

But, besides all that, we did enjoy our night here. It is actually quite nice to be in a clean and orderly city in southeast Asia. Not even any stray dogs or cats messing with us! And no litter! The train system was extremely well run and easy to navigate, best I've ever seen. We stayed in Little India, as that was the cheapest area, and an interesting place to visit. Our tiny hostel room with shared bathroom was still $60, an unheard of price compared to the rest of our travels. But we enjoyed some good, authentic Indian food aka, too spicy to eat comfortably. I also loved observing Indian culture, particularly the temple and all the colorful saris and sashes.

The next morning we boarded our flight to Bali and crossed into the southern hemisphere for the first time.

Look at the subway station, so orderly!  They could use this in NY.
